Having suffered with the joys of dry skin and eczema on my face all of my life, I think I may have found a solution. My skin can be highly reactive at the best of times; walking past someone who wears perfume/aftershave or using strong cleaning products can be problematic to my very sensitive and temperamental skin. Animals and pet hair too can give me an adverse reaction. I have been pursuit for a solution to my embarrassingly itchy skin for as long as I can remember. It’s a bit like trying to find a needle in a haystack; I feel like I have tried every cream or lotion going, from dead expensive to dirt cheap and everything in between. I came across this DYI recipe for homemade eczema cream online, see the below weblink. I’ve had a go at making it, I’ve tried it and I like it! My skin feels and looks good, I haven’t had a reaction for a few weeks now which is more than a bonus and my face is looking clearer and less itchy.. Try it out!
I would suggest that you make sure that you don’t use too much honey and try and stick to the recipe. Honey can be difficult to measure; I think I may have over done it. I sterilized my jars like you do when you make jam. I have tons now, yippee, the ingredients are cheap too. I used a hand blender to blend it, you need to keep blending it until it is fully blended. I blended my cream about four or five times.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup raw Shea butter
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1 Tb local honey
- 30 drops lavender essential oil
- 8 drops tea tree essential oil
- 5 drops geranium essential oil
Directions:
- Melt Shea butter and coconut oil together in a double broiler. You can use a glass Tupperware container inside a stove top pot to create a sort of homemade one.
- Add honey to the container. Stir.
- Melt it all. Make sure it is blended and then add the oils.
- Cool ingredients. It will get a bit thicker but you want to make sure it stays soft so that it is easier to mix. Dr. Axe recommends putting it in the fridge to speed up the process. I did do that but I’m not sure if it made a huge difference.
- Use a mixer (I used an immersion blender) and mix until it is frothy and starts to look like lotion. You should do this every 10 minutes. It took mine about an hour to look like lotion so I mixed it 5 or 6 times.
- I stored mine in a glass jam jars, pre sterilised.
